Traditional Joinery & Wood Repair
May 2, 2026 | 10:00 am - 3:30 pm
Baxendale Schoolhouse Preservation Center, Helena
What You'll Learn
Participants will learn practical techniques used to repair and preserve historic structures.
The class begins with an overview of wood deterioration and rot identification, including how to inspect wood and determine the best repair strategy. Participants will then learn how to safely remove damaged material and replace it with new wood, including guidance on wood selection, adhesives and fillers used in preservation work.
After a safety orientation covering tools such as table saws, Skilsaws, pull saws, Fein tools, chisels and clamps, instructors will demonstrate key repair techniques including rot removal, wood filling, flat glue-ups, dutchmen repairs and lap joints.
The majority of the workshop is dedicated to hands-on practice, where participants will try the techniques themselves—removing rot, cutting a lap joint, and joining fresh wood to stabilize a repair.
The workshop will be held in the historic Baxendale Schoolhouse, offering a fitting setting to learn the craft of preserving historic buildings.
