Historic Tax Credits

Historic tax credits are a powerful tool to incentivize the rehabilitation and reuse of income-producing properties in communities across Montana.

Historic tax credits are an essential tool for revitalizing Montana’s communities through the rehabilitation and reuse of historic buildings. Both state and federal income tax credits are available to Montana taxpayers who undertake a certified rehabilitation of a historically designated property. Administered by the National Park Service and Montana State Historic Preservation Office, this important incentive leverages private investment for public benefit. The results can be remarkable, as seen above with the Arvon Block rehabilitation in Great Falls.

An estimated $7.2 million in state historic tax credits and $28.7 million in federal historic tax credits have leveraged $144 million in private investment for 69 projects in 18 Montana communities, between 1997 (when the tax credit was enacted) and 2024.
